I had a conversation with a library media specialist serving a local high school regarding making the space more like Barnes & Noble with students sipping coffee & nibbling on coffee cake while listening to music and chatting with other students both face-to-face and virtually. This all came up because their "book cafe" seemed to have turned into a place to buy food and see their friends. She was wondering if maybe that was an okay thing, and that maybe making the whole library experience like that would attract more patrons.
This chat caused me to evaluate how my patrons, elementary-aged students, use my space-what they enjoy doing and so forth. The students really love my "free time class days" in which I do not do a FCAT-skill building lesson. On those days they enjoy building stuff with Legos and Lincoln Logs, being violent with the hand puppets, playing chess or checkers or other board games, putting together puzzles, drawing, looking at the gross pictures in the Guinness series, playing around on the computer and looking at magazines.
My question is: What is wrong with that?
